Object Portraits (2021)

THE THEME FOR TWENTY TWENTY-ONE WAS OBJECT PORTRAITS, inspiration for which arose from a combination of the health and safety constraints of the early Covid era coupled with the goal of centering some of the many lovely humans who formed the beating heart of the social club.

Artist’s Statement: Creating art in these challenging times, and sending beautiful physical objects in hand-addressed envelopes, held great value for me and is why I am committed to sharing a piece every month throughout 2021.

This year’s series is entitled Object Portraits — elegantly arranged personally meaningful objects, graciously gathered and shared by members of the Social Club. Each artfully composed photograph presents an incarnation of the member and their experiences this past year, accompanied by lovely stories behind these objects.

This series grew from the playful compositions of my 2019 Diptychs, evolving in early quarantine into lighthearted knolled tray experiments. In these isolating circumstances, small odds and ends have taken on great emotional significance, both as we look back at more social times and reflect on those lost to us. With this Object Portraits series, I compose these objects with my signature elegance, aspiring to reveal through them the potent personal histories usually hidden from view, and in doing so capture some essence of these fine people; like a traditional portrait, we experience a glimpse of their inner beauty through a faithful depiction of a sliver of their experience.
