We selected these objects to provide a glimpse of us as a couple: our similarities, our differences, and some of the traits that attract us to each other.
- The Japanese book of blotting paper is a little memento of a few days they spent with friends in Kanazawa, a city with an extremely cute mascot: Hyakuman-san, Mr. One Million.
- The Count of Monte Cristo, represented here by a wooden figurine of Alexandre Dumas, is his favorite novel in the world, despite — or perhaps because of — its flaws.
- The holes in the gentleman’s driving gloves show off his manicure, and the lacy mesh beautifully shows off hers. (He’s never driven a car.)
- His pocket square, made from vintage 1950s textiles, combines a love of kitsch and dandyism with a lifelong interest in African history.
- She wears cologne, not perfume, and Tom Ford’s Ombre Leather is the perfect smoky, leathery scent.
- Her “Sting Me, Sting Me” Pin was a gift from a friend with an extensive collection of vintage alt-sex and queer objects; they (the friend, not the pin) know how much she loves them.
- Her Catholic education led to highly specialized hobbies; this book on torture is among them.
- His sterling silver pendant is from the Ostia Synagogue in Rome, the oldest synagogue in Europe.
- The Rudolph Valentino paper doll came from one of her sweethearts; she’s a sucker for pretty boys.
- Their cherished copy of Boris Karloff’s Favorite Horror Stories — while she was the horror fanatic at first, he has since joined her as a fellow scream queen.
