Knolled Trays

These studies began as a bit of idle play during the second quarter of 2020 — a way of passing quarantine by arranging the small objects at hand into tight, edge-aligned compositions on a tray, in the style photographers call “knolling.” A tie, a pocket watch, a set of keys, a scattering of club tokens: nothing especially precious on its own, but composed with enough care that it started to look like it belonged in a vitrine rather than a junk drawer.

What began as a private exercise quickly became a signature. The compositions grew more elaborate, the objects more personal, and by early 2021 the format had evolved directly into the Object Portraits series — twelve members’ worth of gathered belongings, each arranged with the same knolled precision.
