I Ching Divination
The I Ching — the Chinese Book of Changes — is consulted rather than read outright: a cast of yarrow stalks or coins produces a number, the number points to one of the text’s sixty-four hexagrams, and the hexagram is the answer, left for the querent to interpret against their question.
The props stand in for the ritual rather than reproducing it literally — a small object turned over in the hand while the actual counting happens elsewhere, off camera, the way most of any divination's real work always does.
